faux stonework

Last year my sister was visiting me and while here, she commented on my outdated kitchen backsplash. A previous owner had put up Bon Appétit magazine covers and then put some sort of finish on them- and that was my kitchen back splash. Over time the magazine covers had faded, so it was time to do something- but being innately lazy, as much as I knew I needed to do something, I just wasn't quite ready to deal with it...

But my sister is very persistent! She mentioned the backsplash another time (or two). The last time she was here, she was showing me how eeeesy it would be to just peeeeel off the magazine covers...and peeled one cover off the wall! I couldn't believe it!

I decided to seize the moment- I went to my closet and found my spackle putty knife and handed it to her saying, "Now that you started it, you can finish it!" And she did!! So now I had this God awful scraped wall with old scraps of magazine left here and there that wouldn't come off...and it stayed that way for a good 8 months (read: one year) until I got sick of looking at it. One day I just picked up my brushes and started painting. I figured if it turned out terrible, I could always paint right over it. It was a very different painting experience for me to paint on a large surface and I felt sort of free and adventurous! (I really do need to get out more).

I think it turned out OK. It's my first faux stone attempt- it's a little darker than I envisioned...but it's better than the scraped icky wall! Next kitchen home improvement - the PINK counter...WHO puts in a PINK kitchen counter?? It was here when I moved in. I promise.

This is a great idea!!! I am going to paint my bathroom corner wall, but I was just going to do something dull, like just one color below, another above, but you have given me the idea to really have some fun! Like you said, I can just paint over it.
